Description: Its name comes from the Latin calx, which means quicklime. It is the most stable mineral that exists of calcium carbonate, compared to the other two polymorphs with the same chemical formula but different crystalline structure: aragonite and vaterite, more unstable and soluble. Calcite is very common and has a wide distribution throughout the planet, it is estimated that approximately 4% by weight of the earth's crust is calcite.
